Come on Closer – (Chapter: Who’s life isn’t complicated?)

    Ashley POV

“Miss Davies, you have a call on line 2”

“Miss Davies, you’re needed in the conference room”

“Miss Davies, your sister is meeting you for lunch at two”

“EVERYBODY BE QUIET!” I shout to no one imparticular, especially considering that I am alone in my office. All of this communication was coming from the intercom that leads in from the secretaries office. I don’t like leaving my office frankly because I don’t like anyone else in the building. This doesn’t settle well with everyone because my job title is technically to bring clients to my boss. Attend parties, socials, and dinners over and over again. Sucking up to rich men and their wives. So if I seem anti-social at the office then it worries them that I’m like this outside the office. I do my job, it’s just a job to me, but I do it and I do it well.

“Carmen, can you please hold all my calls for five minutes” I ask and I push the ‘gone’ button on my phone before I get a response. I stand up from my unnecessarily large desk, grab my coffee, and stand by the window. My office is downtown Seattle and I have a fantastic view of Puget Sound from my window. When ever I’m stressed I just stand by this window and take a couple breaths and drink my coffee for a few minutes. Coffee is my best friend. Always there, always good, never disappointing. Well, no I take that back, my sister Kyla is my best friend. Always there, always good, never disappointing. I love both of them.

I let myself feel sorry for my self for only two minutes. That’s my limit. My theory is that if I spend my whole life worrying about what I don’t have (love, a real life, a dog) then I can’t focus on the things going well in my life (job, work, and my career). Okay, so maybe things aren’t going so bad for me, I do have friends and a life…but my job is my life. It may seem as if I have all these contacts because I’m always at functions talking with people. But it’s meaningless talk. Nothing beyond your name, age, job title, and opinion on politics. No one understands how I can let something suck up all my time while ignoring the repercussions. No one except for my sister. A fellow workaholic. I think thats when we started to finally get along, when we both got a job that required us to work more than 12 hours a day. Also because both of our parent are gone. Our dad died when we were in High School and both of our mom’s passed before we turned 25. We only have each other to lean on. The only difference is Kyla lets herself lean on other people as well. Meaning she has a lot more friends than me.
