Chopped and Screwed – (Chapter: 24: DA del Diablo)

‘You promise you’d trust me, so just trust me on this. It’s practical and personal.’

“Okay, I trust you,” I sigh. Kristal, of all the people in the world, would be the last person I would trust to represent me. Her conniving ways could come in handy in court, though…

Just then, a man, probably another lawyer, waltzed in carrying a few papers in hand.

“Excuse me, Mr. Scott, told me to read you the list of charges filed against you,” a young man of about seventeen tells us. He clears his throat before continuing, “Corruption and carnal knowledge of a child, three counts of trespassing, vandalism, thievery, prowling, public intoxication, indecent exposu—“

    “Anything else?” Ashley snaps.

He glared at her before finishing, “and disturbing the peace!”

Ashley deeply sighs before saying, “Those are all fabricated lies so I don’t know what the hell I’m here for!”

“Well, lady, my daddy doesn’t lie. He says you did it, you did it, so you sure do have a helluva lot of time to serve,” he said, tapping the paper. “You’ll probably get at least fifteen years. My daddy taught me that too, by the way.”

“Did your daddy also teach you how to be a whiny, incompetent pussy?” she mocks. “Like father like son, I guess,” Ashley mumbles under her breath. The bad girl in her was beginning to come out in her, too. My bad girl came out the night of the arrest, so it was only a matter of time before Ashley reverted back to her old ways.

“I’ll have you know that my father hasn’t lost a case in five years, and before that, he was undefeated for sixteen years! That’s why he was promoted to Chief Assistant District Attorney”

As if on cue, in walks Mr. Scott. “That’s my boy,” he said, ruffling his hair. “Get out of here, scamp,” he whispers, “and try to sweet talk that new secretary with the big whoo-hoos.” He gestures towards his sagging man boobs and makes squeezing motions. “I hear she’s a good candidate to take care of a boy’s problem.” To clarify his words, he slightly thrusts his hips and adds a small ‘bow chicka wa wah’.

Ashley and I cringe in disgust at what we have just witnessed.

He clears his throat in order to speak at a normal volume. “I take it that my son read the list of charges against you, Ms. Davies. Might I add that I’m going to have a fun time duking it out with your lawyer in court,” he adds suggestively.

“What do you mean?” I ask, scared at the obvious answer.

“As in I’m the prosecutor for the state. Usually I only supervise investigations and take smaller misdemeanor cases, but this case was too close to my heart for me to pass up. I believe that vile filth in our society, such as yourself Ms. Davies, need to be eradicated. Prison erases a person and molds them into an upright citizen of the United States of America. It’s a shame that there are people like you out there, but luckily, we have people like me to stop you,” he lectures smugly.

“Excuse me, Mr. Scott, but who filed all of these complaints against my client?”

“See for yourself,” he shrugs, handing the few papers to me. We look at the warrant at the same time, quickly skimming through the unimportant parts. At the top of the paper, the charges are listed. Towards the bottom of the paper, the reviewer of the warrant signed as A.S. Scott. Next to it, there in black and white ink, was a john hancock of the plaintiff. Scrawled in loopy letter was an unmistakable S. Carlin.

Ashley looks up at me, betrayal apparent in her eyes.

“I think we’re done here, Mr. Scott,” I tell him, packing up my things. “Rest assured, I will be back. Just make sure you’re ready for a fight,” I snarl as menacingly as I can.
