Chimera – (Chapter: Patience and Good Fortune)
By the time she had reached the back of the building it had already started to drizzle lightly with tiny droplets clinging to her hair as she pulled it back into a ponytail.
She knew the back was unguarded; yes, unguarded, and there were several escape routes she could choose from in the event that something should go wrong. It never went wrong though. She was too precise and precautious to allow even the most random of occurrences to throw her for a loop. That was part of why she was so good at what she did.
When the knob was turned and the door pushed open she was assaulted by the nauseatingly sweet smell of opium and marijuana. The smoke billowed out and past her as she entered in the building, her pace unhurried but her eyes very aware of the hazy surroundings.
Through a dimly lit hallway she walked past people strung out and high on probably a multitude of substances. Some muttered to themselves while others sat slumped with their eyes glazed over in a drug induced stupor. This was where the low-income abusers hung out; she was after the high-class hangout.
She continued towards a staircase that twisted to the right and led down into the basement. The steps creaked under her weight but the sound was muffled by the low din of pounding base coming through a closed door. Smoke filtered slowly threw the space between the door itself and the ground along with a red light.
Taking a deep breath, she twisted the knob and was assaulted by more smoke and the raspy crooning of Esthero over a loud stereo system. All around her were people in expensive dress or street wear lounging on couches or walking in out of rooms further in the back. They talked, took drags from pipes, and hits from bongs and lit joints. Some were even blatantly making out in public or one article of clothing away from being true exhibitionists but no one seemed to care. This was the real playground of the rich and powerful, a seedy den of debauchery and addiction that the press would die to find out about.
Her composure remained intact, the way she walked in giving off no suspicion. Most would simply think that she was just another dealer with her large army jacket and baggy jeans.
