    Ashley and Spencer both struggle with their thoughts as they find very little to say to each other.

    Spencer’s POV

    I was right. Ashley’s charm worked and much more quickly than I thought it would. We’d only been back at the bar for fifteen minutes, and Rachel had already agreed to swear in a court of law that she had been sleeping with Herbie—Alex—whatever.

    I was afraid that Rachel wasn’t the only one that her charm was working on. Every time she tossed that smile in the bartender’s direction I felt a pang in my side. It physically hurt to watch her flirt with another person—even if she was doing it to help me.

    Before long, we had gotten into the same rut that we’d been in our senior year of high school. We were sitting side by side at the bar, but we hadn’t said anything to each other. The world was moving around us, and we were essentially avoiding each other. She would talk to Jared or Rachel, and I would do the same. She hadn’t spoken to me since we left the parking lot, and I was beginning to think that she never would. I found it rude and very irritating.

    She was making me insane! I didn’t know what to say to her, but she wasn’t helping me at all. Every time I looked in her direction, she would talk to Jared, or she would ask Rachel for another drink. She never talked to me; she never really even looked at me.

    I felt like I was running out of time. I was sure that Spencer would be leaving soon; we’d been playing this weird game of avoidance for at least an hour, and She had already gotten what she’d come for. I needed her to talk to me. I needed her to at least acknowledge that I was there. She was the only person in the world that could make me feel so useless—so unwanted.

    Okay, two hours is my limit. I’m done playing her game. I did it for far too long in high school, and I’m not doing it anymore. She was the same person I’d run away from so long ago, and I wasn’t going to waste my time trying to make a friendship happen with someone who so obviously doesn’t want it.
