The Short Life Of Franky Doyle

After that we decided that it was us against the bloody world. We just wanted to be together all the time. We couldn’t get married for real, but we wanted to commit to each other. Our big plan was to move away from the city, to be nearer to Gary so that he could come and live with us when he turned 18.

We had a plan for a one-off bank job that would sort us out. Then we were gonna get a small place out in the sticks where we could just be left alone. It seems to me that if it was just the three of us, we could do real well. It was always when other people got involved that everything goes wrong. I just wanted to be left alone.

On the night we had planned to do the job, something felt off. I couldn’t describe it and put it down to adrenaline, but I should have listened to me gut. We didn’t’ t realise then, how little time we had.

The guard at the bank was not supposed to answer back. If he had just done as we asked, it would have been simple. It was a straightforward job. Not even any customers there to get in the way. Him arguing caused all the trouble. I shot him but not before he took a shot and got D. She was 26 and like me she’d never even left Melbourne. I’ve never stopped thinking about her.

    Dear Freida Joan

I hope this letter finds it’s way to you. Gary’s teacher said that this was the right place to get you. I realise it has been a while, but I wanted to give you some news.

I had word from Aunty Jean that your father has passed away. I am not entirely sure of all the details, but it looks like he got into some trouble, and it all got out of hand. You know what he was like.

The funeral is next Thursday if you wanted to go. I suppose the prison will let you if you want to go. I am not able to make it myself.

Freida I am so sorry that I left you and Gary all those years ago. I just couldn’t stay there anymore; with the way John was. By the end I was exhausted and couldn’t look after myself let alone you two kids. You could always stand up to you dad and protect your brother. I always admired your bravery and boldness. You were a better mum to him that I ever was.
