Lifeline – Chapter 9
Lifeline
Chapter 9
Bette really did feel better having eaten a little breakfast. The coffee went a long way toward bringing her back to life as well. She was feeling a bit more like a functioning human being for the moment, though the lack of sleep was beginning to take a toll on her thought processes.
Kit had convinced Shane to let Jenny take her home for a shower and a nap. She looked like a sleep-deprived scarecrow Kit mused with affection, assuming she must be a sight herself. She refused to leave the hospital as long as Bette was there, but did send James to The Planet to bring back some real food for lunch. The cafeteria fare was hurting the morale of the group, in her estimation. Comfort food was needed.
Helena left to meet Peggy Peabody who was due to arrive on a noon flight from New York, which meant she’d boarded the plane rather early that morning. She would need to rest and freshen up before visiting Bette at the hospital. That would give Helena the opportunity to join the girls for lunch and feel Bette out about whether or not she was up for a visit with her mother. Peggy could be taxing on the wrong day. She’d let Bette make the call.
Alice was currently being dispatched to bring fresh clothes and toiletries from home for Bette and Kit, as well as collecting a very precise list of items that Bette had requested for Tina, including:
(Bette slowly began to read off each item for Alice, stopping to reminisce privately along the way.)
1.)A copy of The Awakening by Kate Chopin, on Bette’s nightstand.
At Tina’s urging they had formed their own book club that convened in their bed each night, during which time they took turns reading aloud to one another. Most nights they actually read. Some nights, less so. Often they played a silly game Tina invented in which they each chose a word – and it couldn’t be a small, common word – And whenever that word came up in the chapter, they had to either put on or take off an article of clothing. For example: If Bette’s word was “special” and she had “take off” that night, then whenever they came to the word “special” they would take something off. And if Tina’s word was “heart” then whenever they came to “heart” in the chapter, they would “put on” an article of clothing. Sometimes, to accelerate the fun, they would each have several words, which made tuning in to the story a bit distracting. It was pretty ridiculous and often ended in sexy half-dressed antics and sometimes in sexy-half-dressed reading. Either way, the Strip Book Club, in which there were just the two members, had been eminently more popular in their household than Oprah’s .

Ahhh…Heartbreakingly beautiful, Nell. Tears welled in my eyes too as I read and re-read The List, the dialogue in Bette’s head and Neruda’s immortal words. Thank you, Nell, from the bottom of my heart. I can’t remember the last time I read a post as poignant, as romantic and as poetic as this. A thousand times thank you for sharing this beautiful love story, Nell. Hugs, mm =)
That was so heartbreaking and beautiful, it made me cry. I left it for a while and just came back to read it again …. and it made me cry again! Thank you so much for this powerful and moving story.
AMAZING!
Such a moving chapter. I love your amazing approach to this story.
My Lord, I’ve read a lot of beautiful love stories on this site over the years, some made me cry buckets and made me hurt and sad all at the same time. But this chapter is the greatest example of complete love and adoration I have ever read anywhere at anytime in my life. It points out the complete connection they have with each other. At first I thought it was showing that connection they have with each other, and that may be your intention but, whatever your intent was this chapter has exceeded it. It is the most poignant thing I’ve ever read regarding the love between two poeple. Bette is famous for making lists but, this one is so very complete and beautiful showing just how much she loves Tina, the video that Bette mentioned at the end and the Neruda poem took my breath away and made me cry buckets all over again. Thanks for sharing this wonderful story. Hopefully Tina will wake up after listening to all the things that Bette wants to play for her and I think this will do the trick and, of course, Bette talking to her. Simply beautiful and amazing. Thanks again.
I hope you come back very soon and continue this story. Yes it’s sad but very beautiful. I love the conversation in Bette’s head and her devotion to Tina, so very touching.
I finally caught up with incredible story. I know that you started this story way before the AZ situation but it seems to fit what is happening in real life. I trust that you keep Bette from going crazy and making herself sick while Tina is fighting her own battle to live.
Beautiful.Thank you.
This is amazing and heartbreaking. Hope Tina will wake up soon. Please post more, thanks!
Hi gr8d8, This is so touching and emotional. The real shame is that often in life it takes life-threating events to focus us on the important things. Bette and Tina have such a complete connection. This story encapsulates this perfectly. I just adore it. Many thanks for sharing it with me. A Fan.
