Only Women Bleed – Chapter 9

    Chapter 9

My world fell apart when I was eight years old.  My mother had a headache and then she died.  An aneurysm the doctors said.  Nothing could have predicted it or prevented it.  My mother was just gone.  My father and stepmother picked me up at the hospital and took me to a house I usually saw only on Wednesday nights and every other weekend.  It was now my home.  My three year old half-sister jumped all over me, “Mikey, Mikey, Mikey”, and didn’t stop until I smiled at her.  I didn’t know I could still smile.

So the hours turned into days, the days turned into weeks, and the weeks turned into months.  My dad didn’t seem to know what to do with me.  He avoided being alone with me or talking about my mother.  But my stepmom was there for me in every way possible.  It was my stepmom who sang me to sleep when I awoke from frightening dreams; it was my stepmom who listened to me cry when I missed my mother so much that I thought I would break in two; it was my stepmom who took me to the park to play on the swing so that when I was high in the air and closed my eyes really tight, I could imagine that my mother was behind me giving me the biggest push.

Eventually I stopped calling her “Tina” and started calling her “Mommy”, just like my little sister did.  She did not ever try to replace my mother; she just wanted to be there for me.  After they divorced, I chose to live with Mom and Angelica rather than Dad.  Dad seemed relieved.  My relationship with Dad is better now.  I mostly live with him, and my new stepmother Dottie, because they live close to my school.  But it is still Mom I go to when I need a shoulder to cry on (yes, I know, a 17 year old guy should not admit to crying, so please don’t share this essay with any of my potential classmates!)

And that is why my hero is, and will always be, my Mom.  I’ll never know if my biological mother would have been my hero, but I know that I have been lucky to have my Mom in my life.  If you let me into Stanford, I promise I’ll bring her by the admissions office to say hello.

    1. Just thinking about what Tina must be feeling brought tears to my eyes. When I was 14 my sister and I chose to go live with our biological mother rather than staying with our adoptive parents. I know that decision broke my adoptive mother’s heart…and, I only lived with my bio mother for six months before realizing that she was not my mother. I moved back home with my adoptive parents, and there is a part of me, even now at the age of 47, that is still trying to make up for the heart ache I caused both my adoptive parents. Thank you.

    2. I hope Sarah can help Angie to explain herself, cos Angie moving to Bette’s isn’t going to work for Tina. It barely works for Tina when it’s not her week as it is. It’s going to crush her parents when the reasons come, but they’ve got to be told. Post soon, 24.

    3. sure the first story i read today and you bring tears to my eyes… i feel bad for tina… but i hope angie comes out with the real reason… i would of hoped she would of said she loved to live with both of them together in one house… maybe that will be the next sentence.. PPS

    4. WOW I loved the first part of the chapter how Mikey wrote an essay on his mother-Tina, that was great,,,,,and then to read how Angie felt like she had no address,,LOL,,,but at the end wanted to live with mama/Bette,,,I say why not let Tina move in with them :) Cause this is going to be a heartbreak for Tee. And divorce does stink, my parents divorced when I was 17 and mom left me and my kid bro with our dad, best thing she ever did in her life, IMHO!!!! He is The DAD!!

    5. Poor Tina. I am sure Bette will do everything within her to save Tina the hurt and devastation that she sees in Tina. Bette still has a massive soft corner in her heart for Tina. Love this story.

    6. Awesome story but it sucks that you left us at that point. Further explanation obviously needed. After being on a high from reading Mikey’s college essay now to the pits after Angie’s statement. Families are fun aren’t they?? PPS. (like tomorrow)

    7. Well, if Henry molested Angie she won’t feel safe and at home in Tina’s house. Even though Tina didn’t do it, for Angie its like she let it happen. Bette is her safe haven. Tina’s real devastation will come when she realizes what happened to her daughter on her watch. Bette will blow a gasket as the whole Henry thing has been a nightmare of Tina’s making. There may also be a bit of guilt that she gave so much to Mikey that she neglected Angelica, shame, shame, shame. Not sure how a parent deals with that. For sure she should let Angie move, if Angie will be happier and get healthy. Just like Mikey’s relationship with Henry improved over time, Tina and Angelica’s relationship and improve as well. Not sure about B&T though, that’s a hard one.

    8. Oh God…that felt like a knife in the heart. I think Angie would be better off talking to the therapist alone. I don’t know if she will open up about what’s been happening if her moms are right there. Just a thought! PPS!!

    9. Even though I am not a tibetter, I think this is a well written story. I don’t care whether B/T get back together, in fact I hope they don’t, but this thing with Angie is heartbreaking, and I even hurt for Tina. I am sure Angie feels safer with Bette, and I hope she is able to get this out and let them know what happened..for her sake she has to. I am trying to think who the perp could be, and I don’t think it is henry. I think it must be a friend of Mikey’s, someone he knows well, to leave Angie alone with him while he went for beer. Mikey also said he would “fix it.” I hope they throw the book at Mikey, for leaving her with this guy and for wanting to cover his own a**, begging her not to tell. It kills me that too many men can see a girl, of any age and just think they have the right to take what they want from her. As stated, this all happened in a situation Tina created and on her watch, and I hope everyone remembers this when the truth comes out.

    10. Gosh, that must be hard for Tina, but it maybe “BEST” for Angie. I really think it is time for Tina and Bette to REALLY, REALLY talk!!! Please post soon! What would it take for me to be one hundred percent??? MAYBE a few more decades in therapy :). Great Fic, fantastic Writing/Author.

    11. Sorry, I’m a little behind in my comments.Yup, a difficult situation here, especially for Tina at this moment. However, I am not worried about this family in the long run, especially in your capable hands.Loved the last chapter, too. Me smart? Nah – just tuning in to a well-written story.

    12. Jesus, thats deep! I don’t know what divorce is like, and I never want to deal with it or live with it, especially seeing how upset it can make a child. Thanks for posting

    13. Wow, I’m really enjoying this story. I hope that Bette and Tina can work out some other arrangement so that Angelica feels safe. I hope she able to tell her mom’s what’s going on soon , poor thing … please post soon .

    14. Divorce sucks. Poor Angie. Poor Tina, what a blow to her that Angie wants to live fulltime with Bette. I hope Angie is able to confide in her parents about the real reasons she feels safer at Bette’s house. PS, Tina is a saint, essentially raising Mikey, even after the divorce :). Thanks for posting.

    15. wtf?! Tina must be ripped!!! Is it becuz Angie has the bad memory of when T was with Henry?!!! I’d like to kill that bastard if he did molest Angie (It is not unusual for a step-parent/brother/family to molest the child who has no defence without his/her other parent around…it doesn’t seem like it was Mikey, it better not have been him…this is scarey…but great…it would be best if Tina moved home to Bette…Angie has always needed both her parents imo…pps

    16. It is the most devastating, soul-destroying thing to find out your child was raped ‘on your watch’!!!!!! The guilt never goes away even tho’ the child tries to protect you the parent…at some time they become very angry that the parent put them in this situation…I feel damned sorry for all of them…becuz some children never recover they just go onto self-destruct…if they survive it may take years and years to become a functioning adult. Thank u for raising such a difficult subject.

    17. wow, what a statement, i hope angie will explain why so tina won’t be in pain, i think it’s because of what happened in tina’s house…and yes, i want B&T back together, did my name give it away?

    18. Wow, I can imagine how hurt Tina is, that even hurt me. Tina is a good woman and mother, and can’t possible understand right now what is driving Angie’s thoughts. Hope she can find out soon, even then she is going to be so guilt ridden. Hopefuly Bette comes to her rescue. Great thought provoking story. PPS

    19. Again, I find myself hanging off of the edge of my seat. I love the suspense but I’m dying to find out what happens next! Please post again soon!

    20. WOW!!! That just broke TIna’s heart. I just hope Angie will give them a good reason for wanting to live with Bette!!! Great Chapter Thanks PPS

    21. oh poor tina what a hard blow to take one (step)kid thinking your a hero the other not wanting to live with you…PLZ post again very soon

    22. hey,I´m anxious to know when bette and tina will find about angie´s issues. It painful for tina loss her daughter clueless it was done.By the way, I suggest a abuse tentative and no the abuse in fact;it´s very hard!hug.

    23. Just catching up on your wonderfull story here – I must say it is a great fresh story you have build up here. What a blow to the face for Tina but I’m sure Bette will suggest that they all move in together :O) and start to rebuild their relationship again. Sorry to hear about Angie having all these problems but I’m sure the will find a way to move forward. Post soon
