Loving Jenny – Chapter 4: Thus Spoke, Shane McCutcheon

I sat at the table, drinking a beer, not even giving a second thought to the open window. It was raining hard outside, and I knew if the wind started picking up, the rain would gain entrance to our kitchen.

Jenny walked in, shaking off her raincoat, making sounds as she dropped the bags on the floor. She started unpacking without even looking at me, placing the canned goods into the cabinets and the diary products in the fridge.

“I bought you more beer, Shane,” she said. I sipped the one I cradled in my hand, and nodded.

“Thanks, Jen.” Jenny stopped and looked me over, seeing that I, more than likely, looked a mess.

“Shane, what’s the matter? Is everything okay?” Jenny asked, making her way over to me. She kneeled in front of me, rubbing my arm. I smirked and sipped my beer again.

“I’m fine. Carmen just…stressed me out tonight.” Jenny flashed me a sympathetic look and stood back up, placing a kiss upon my forehead as she made her way back over to the bags of groceries.

“Want my help?” I asked, turning my head.

“No, no. I got it.” I nodded and played with the silver springs on the notebook. I sat silently as I heard Jenny messing around with the groceries and the cd player on the counter. I smirked when I heard the beginning of “Just What I Needed” by The Cars. It was her favorite song at the moment, and when she wasn’t listening to it, she was singing it.

“I wrote today,” I said suddenly. When I turned to see Jenny’s reaction, I was met with a smile.

“Good! What about?” I turned so I sat on the chair backwards, facing Jenny.

“My feelings about some things. Was that good?” I asked. Jenny nodded as she opened a bag of chips.

“Yeah! Yeah, sure. Feel free to write anything and everything you want.” I nodded. My eyes locked onto Jenny, and followed her as she made her way across the room to a chair near the window. She took a seat, regardless that the rain – which was slowing – was wetting the back of her shirt. She pushed the window open wider, breathing in the cool breeze.
