The Absence of One chapter 5

The party carried on, despite Bette and Tina’s early departure. Kit left to check on her staff and the three friends chose to sip on their drinks and watch the crowd groove to the music.

“Do you think Bette’s going over to Tina’s place?” Helena asked her roommate as they left the Planet.

“Are you kidding me? No way,” Alice shook her head. “Absolutely not. Not when Tina still is up to her neck in heteroville.”

“No matter what, they can’t deny the love they have for each other,” Helena insisted. Her friend’s opinion on Tina’s switch in sexual orientation baffled her. Alice was all for getting Bette and Tina back together, but she could not let go of the fact Tina had distance herself from them. As though they were the plague.

“Yet others seem to be able to get in between.” Seeing her driver’s contrite expression, Alice continued. “Can we not talk about them anymore?”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you,” Helena reached over to pat the woman on her shoulder. “Care for some late-night munchies? I’m craving for some scrumptious scoff.”

    “Scoff?”

Helena chuckled. She sometimes forgot they spoke a different type of English around here. “Food.”

Alice smiled. Underneath that cocky British façade was a caring woman. It took her some time to get used to Helena’s presence, but time diminished the animosity.

“If I gain five pounds from the grease I’m going to hold you accountable.”

“You Americans and your empty threats,” Helena smirked.” How does eggs and waffles sound? We can wash it down with a spot of Darjeling. I know this great place that serves the tastiest English grub.”

“Just listening to it is making my arteries clog,” Alice rolled her eyes dramatically. “We’ll have to walk it off at the park tomorrow. Provided if I’m still alive.”

“We can see if Bette and Shane want to join us,” Helena offered quietly.

Alice perked up as the idea registered. “Hey, Helena, that’s a great idea! Shane can bring Shay and Bette can bring Angie.”

“I know,” Helena beamed. “We’ll go in the afternoon.”

    “I’ll call them tomorrow.”

While the two friends enjoyed their meal, a certain brunette laid awake at home. The night was dragging on, and insomnia reared its ugly head once again. Frustrated, she flipped the covers and headed for the living room.

    1. Is Henry insecure that he found it necessary to walk up to Bette door to get Tina? Maybe it’s time for Bette to start dating again. We already know Tina doesn’t like other women checking out Bette, so maybe this can help her decide if it’s Bette she really wants. On another note, I hope you get Alice and Helena together, they seem cute together.
