The Alterna-L-Word
Chapter Five
The late afternoon West Hollywood traffic was out and about making his quest that much more difficult. Then he saw it. That rich, dark, long hair. That short stature. Those piercing blue pools that assisted in bringing that doe-eyed looked to life. He could always spot Jenny Schecter from a mile away.
“Please tell me you can help me?”
“I can help you,” she said, placing her hands on his forearms.
“Thank you Jesus,” he said, “I’m so lost everyone’s not who they were and I don’t know how to fix it.”
“I understand,” she said.
“You do?”
“Completely. It’s like you’ve woken up and nothing is as it was when you went to sleep.”
“Yes,”
“And everything’s a mess. Up is down. Right is left. Straight is…”
“Gay, exactly,”
“And you’d give anything to fix it back,”
“Oh God I would,”
“How was that?”
“What?”
“Was that believable? ‘Cause I can do it again. Maybe I should do it again,”
“Wha…you’re not Jenny are you?”
“I could be if you want me to be,”
“No…who are you?”
“Who am I?”
“Yes. Who are you? Your name,”
“Elizabeth Short,”
“Oh this is great,” said Kenny, throwing up his hands in exasperation. “You can’t help me,” he said walking away.
“Maybe I can. Aren’t you a movie director? What would you like me to do?”
‘Side bar. If there is anyone in the world who could identify with the crazy stuff I’m going through it would be Jenny. What do you know? She’s good for something after all.’
Kenny took a deep breath. “Okay, I woke up this morning and everything and everyone is different. I think I’ve slipped into to weird alternate reality where none of my friends or family are the people I know them to be.”
Elizabeth stared at him for a moment. “So you think you’re in another world?”
“That’s correct,” said Kenny.
“Where your friends and family are different people?”
“Also correct,”
“And my guess is that you want to get back?”
Kenny nodded.
“O….kay. I’m going to…walk over here because I think you’re just a little bit crazy.” Just like that Elizabeth turned on her heel and was gone before he knew it.
‘I think I’m insulted. Did Jenny just call ME crazy? Me? Her and Tim are a perfect match in this world. He’s trying to blow my brains out and she’s auditioning for movies on the street. And has the audacity to call me crazy? That’s rich.’
