    Ashes, ashes…

“You about ready?” Shane asked, forcing her hands a little deeper into her jeans pockets.

“Yeah.  I guess.  I mean, I can always come back, right?  If I forget something.”

“Yep.  You can always come back,” Shane nodded.

Tina surveyed the room again, wandering across the polished hardwood floors to straighten a throw pillow, adjust a vase on an end table.

    “Shane,” she said quietly.

    “Uh huh.”

“Ium.  Thanks.  For being here with me.”

“Hey,” Shane said, walking to join Tina where she stood staring out at the perfectly manicured lawn.  “I wanted to.  I’m not going anywhere.”

    Tina forced a half smile.

“C’mon.  Let’s get out of here. ‘kay?”  Shane picked up the small box of odds and ends that Tina had gathered.  A few framed photographs.  Two books.  Half a dozen CDs.

“Okay,” Tina finally replied, turning from the window.

They sat in silence in the front seat of Shane’s truck, staring at the For Sale sign in the yard.

“That happened pretty fast, didn’t it?”

“SheBette wants to get things settled as soon as possible.  She can’t seriously look for a new place in Seattle until she’s got the money from the house,” Tina shrugged.

“How do you like the apartment?  Do you think you’ll stay?”

“It’s a place to go at the end of the day.  That’s really all that matters right now.  I can’t even think beyond the end of each day.”

“I want you to think about letting me stay with you.  Temporarily.”  Shane looked over at Tina, noticing for the hundredth time the dark circles under her friend’s eyes, the weary set of her shoulders, the alarming weight loss that seemed to get more pronounced every time she saw her.

“I appreciate the offer.  Really.  And I know you guys are concerned.  But-”

“I’m not talking about a permanent arrangement.  I’m talking a few weeks.  A month at most.”

    “Shane”

“You shouldn’t be alone now, Tina.”

“Look.  I love you.  You and Alice and Dana.  All of you.  You guys have been so incredibly wonderful through this wholething.  But you can’t fix it.  You can’t make mebetter.  My daughteris dead,” Tina whispered, swallowing hard, still barely able to acknowledge the fact, let alone say it out loud.  “And my marriage couldn’t survive that loss.  There’s nothing anyone can do about either of those things.”

    5. Wow. Missed your posts a lot, for a MIGHTY long while. I am so glad you are back. Two pages and I am hooked (again!). Please continue, FFC. Welcome back. Cheers!

    6. Fanficchick…ahhhh…deep sigh. Thank you for coming back to us. There is no one…and I mean NO ONE on this site, that I would want to write about this subject. Your deep and profound grasp of emotions, as well as your perfectly pitched dialogue, is the combination that will produce another story, that I have no doubt, will touch me and stay with me, just as Comfort Enough has. Again…thank you.

    7. One chapter. One chapter and I’m standing, my feet on the ledge, toes curling on the outer edge, gazing out into the abyss. Fanficchick, you do it for me. Use your powers wisely…

    8. This one seems like a tough one to get through but after reading One step.., Breaking the silence and then comfort enough I am curious as to how old Jordan will be when she dies, because in BTS-she was Nine Years old, when Tina reconnected with her parents.
