Fallen – Chapter 3: Take My Hand (Revised May, 2004)

It had been two days since she last saw Tina. As she pushed open the door to the restaurant she felt nervous butterflies in her stomach. She walked up to the counter and was greeted with a friendly face.

“Num! Hi… so nice to see you.”

“Ahh, Miss Porter! So beautiful as always.” Num replied in his thick accent.

Bette knew he was just flattering her. She was dressed in light blue yoga pants and a zipped up sweat jacket. Her hair pulled back in a ponytail.

    “You are too sweet…”

“Your order is right here… I haven’t seen you and your beautiful lady in sometime. Too busy for us, huh?” He laughed.

The question made Bette sad. ‘No… Num… not busy’ she thought.

“Yeah, you know how things can get, but when we decided to order food this afternoon, you know, you were the first place I thought of.” This was true. Bette knew that Num’s Thai food was Tina’s favorite–Peanut Curry with Chicken over white rice.

“Thank you, Thank you… Here you go and I packed a couple extra fortune cookies, I know how much Tina loves them.”

“Aw, thank you, Num. I am sure she will be very happy you thought of her.” Bette quickly signed the receipt and said her goodbyes. “Tell Supenn we send our love.”

“You too Miss Porter… tell Tina we say hello.”
As she managed the food into the passenger seat of her car she thought about how such a simple conversation had suddenly made her so sad.

He had no idea that their lives were completely upside down. He and his lovely wife had no idea what a total ***** she was; that just two weeks ago Bette had been at hotel, ***** another woman. They had no idea what she had done to Tina. Num and his wife would go one thinking that as is well between the two of them.

She tried not to think about it anymore. Hopefully, if all went well, Num and Supenn could continue living in oblivion. Bette and Tina would be back together soon; sitting at their table by the window, looking at pictures of grandchildren that Supenn always brought over.

Num and Supenn had been married for 42 years.
