Cruise Control – (Chapter: One)
Sixteen year old, Spencer Carlin nodded her head towards Chelsea as Madison parked the four door convertible. Madison nodded back as she climbed out of the back seat. Spencer quickly started the five minute timer on her cell phone. She looked at Madison.
“Are you ready for this?” Spencer asked, talking to Madison while keeping her eyes on Chelsea, who was already waddling half way across the parking lot.
“I should be asking you that.” Madison chuckled. “I’m not the one going into the store.”
“Well, that’s only because you won’t let me be the driver.” Spencer said, pouting.
Madison mocked Spencer’s tone. “Well, that’s only because this is my car.”
Spencer smirked. “Yeah, yeah. Rub it in.” She said.
Spencer and Madison sat in silence for a couple of moments. Madison looked over at Spencer.
“How much time is left?” Madison asked, her eyes trained on the store door. Spencer glanced down at her phone.
“One minute.” Spencer said. Madison raised her eyebrows.
“Well unless you’re superwoman, you better get started across this parking lot.” Madison said, tapping her fingers against the outside car door.
“Gosh, patience.” Spencer said as she opened the door and climbed out.
She walked across the parking lot, careful not to look back at the car. She walked into the store and began to make her way to the cashier desk, in the middle of the store. She saw Chelsea and they made eye contact, but didn’t acknowledge each other in any other way.
Spencer was relieved to see a nerdy looking cashier who looked in his twenties. Thank God Spencer thought to herself. Spencer immediately went into blonde mode as she sashayed over to the counter.
“Hi!” Spencer said, grinning widely as she leaned over the counter, her cleavage highly visible in her low cut top. The man looked up from surveying the security cameras and immediately glanced back down.
“Hi.” He said without looking up. “How may I help you?”
That’s a good question Spencer thought.
“Umm. I was just looking for this shirt that I saw in here not too long ago.”
“How long ago was it mam?” He said, still studying the cameras. Spencer leaned on her hip and twirled a strand of hair around her finger.
