The Pieces That Mattered – (Chapter: Chapter 1)
“Graduation is soon! Can you believe it, Spence? We’re finally going to get out of this hell hole!” An excited Ashley told her friend while walking into King High.
“Yeah, I know.” Spencer said quietly and smiled. She held her books close to her and scanned the crowd of students, noticing the stares and snickers as the two passed everyone. Ashley always noticed this too but she learned to just let it pass.
“So, are you going to come to Aiden’s party with me?” Ashley asked Spencer. She was hopeful that the blond would say ‘yes’ but she was pretty sure what her answer would be.
“Ash, you know that’s not my scene.” Spencer quietly told the brunette.
“Come on Spence. It’s the last party of the year. Maybe we can do something with this,” Ashley flicked the girl’s pony tail, “you can wear your contacts that you never wear, and you know we can do like a whole makeover thing!” Spencer just looked at her friend and chuckled. There was no way in hell that was happening. Ashley got the hint and Spencer could see the hurt in her eyes.
“Fine, I’ll go. But no makeover.” Ashley smiled at the girl and hugged her.
“Thanks, Spence. You’re the best.” Spencer’s face flushed at the compliment. The two teens said their goodbyes and headed to their respective classes.

“You know who else is going to be at the party?” Ashley asked Spencer. They were sitting down in the quad eating their lunch.
“Um…” Spencer knew who Ashley was thinking of but she figured she’d just humor the brunette. “Who?”
“Kelly! I think I’m going to tell her the night of the party. I mean it’s been how long since I’ve been in love with her?”
Spencer just smiled watching her friend talk. Of course she was jealous but it was just common knowledge that someone like Ashley would never be interested in someone like Spencer. She was gawky, not caring what she looked like. She always wore her hair up, and always kept to herself (of course only opening up to Ashley). She would hear people ask Ashley how she could hang out with someone like her and though it hurt Spencer, Ashley always defended her friend no matter what.
