Son Meets Seattle Grace (Chapter 1)

“Spencer! When I say move, you move! What part of rule number five do you not understand?”

My head snapped up as I snatched up my notebook and hurried to catch up with Cristina, my resident here at Seattle Grace Hospital. You see, I’m an intern here, fresh out of med school and part of one of the best programs in the country. It didn’t hurt that my mom is also a doctor at this very hospital, but I don’t want you to think that I get any special treatment because that is definitely not the case. If anything it makes it harder because everyone expects me to be as great at this as she is.

I’ve finally caught up with Cristina and the rest of her group of interns. We’re in the middle of our morning rounds, and we’ve just entered the room of our second patient. I watch as Cristina’s eyes dart back and forth between the five of us, debating who her next victim will be. Her eyes land on me and I know she’s making me pay the price for being slow before.

    “Okay Carlin, you’re up, report.”

I clear my throat and begin. “Mark Johnson, 13, brought in today with acute bacterial tonsillitis.”

“Right, so how do we proceed?”

“Start out with a treatment of antibiotics as well as ibuprofen to help with the pain and inflammation. Then, if that doesn’t work, we proceed with surgery to remove the tonsils.” I take a breath, happy that I got an easy one and that I was prepared today. She simply nods and moves on to the next intern. I can tell morning rounds are not Cristina’s favorite thing. Like the rest of us, she lives to get into the OR. I personally can’t wait for my chance to get in there. We’re leaving Mark’s room now and we all hurry to keep up with Cristina. She moves like a bat out of hell no matter where we’re going. She comes to an abrupt halt though when she hears Dr. Bailey shout her name from across the hall. She’s approaching us now with a girl I’ve never seen before following close behind.

“Dr. Yang, I’ve got a new intern for you. She just transferred here from LA and she’s going to be joining your group.” I catch Cristina roll her eyes slightly at the idea of having to deal with yet another one of us. “I assume that won’t be a problem now will it?” Dr. Bailey questions, eyebrow raised.

“No, of course not Dr. Bailey.” Cristina responds.

“Good. Dr. Yang, meet your new intern, Dr. Ashley Davies. Dr. Davies, this is Dr. Yang, your new resident.” At this Ashley steps out from behind Dr. Bailey and I get my first real glimpse at her. She’s beautiful with long, brown hair and chocolate brown eyes. She smiles and offers her hand to Cristina.

“Its really nice to meet you, I’ve heard a lot about you.” She exclaims. Cristina glances down at her outstretched hand but makes no move to shake it. Instead she simply rolls her eyes again. “Whatever, just do what I say and don’t get in my way.”

And with that, Ashley becomes a part of our team.
