Once in a lifetime – (Chapter: Saying “I do”)

Dinner was buffet style.  Like I said, Dad had his famous chicken and shrimp; Clay dished out his gumbo, Mom pushed her four different salads, and Ashley made sure everyone had a glass of wine.  I milled around, moving from time to time, making sure everyone was satisfied and full.  I was amazed at all of the smiles — everyone was in on the secret of course, and their excitement not only added to mine, but it also made me extremely nervous.  I knew she’d say "yes" — there was no doubt in my mind, but…still…

I was halfway through my second bowl of gumbo when I heard the clinking of silverware on glass.  I turned to see Ash standing on the top rung of one of our barstools, prepared to make a toast.  All eyes were soon on her and I immediately remembered why I had fallen in love with this girl.  While she went on with the typical "thank you all for coming speech," I noticed how still everyone was.  Ashley could command a room and once she had your attention, it was over.  She was mesmerizing, in her body language, in her demeanor, in her voice.  She could be serious, but funny; sincere, but forceful.  And her unpredictability made you hang on every word.  I watched her eyes, which moved around the room, making sure they touched every person there.  Her happiness exuded from her lips and her words; she raised her glass and everyone followed suit.

"To Spencer," she declared, staring at me.  "Thank you for making me take a chance on Colorado.  And for letting me create my studio.  Speaking of which, in about an hour or so, I’ll take anyone up for a grand tour!  Cheers!"  People responded and drank, but I didn’t move.  An hour?!  I looked around frantically as people behind me patted my shoulders. I saw Kyla knock back her champagne, toss her glass on a table, and beeline in my direction.

She took my glass, looked over her shoulder, and saw that Ash was preoccupied.  "Garage.  Now."

She practically dragged me and somehow managed to wrangle Aiden through the kitchen, the back porchroom, and into the garage which thankfully sealed off from the rest of the house.

    3. Oh, God. Poor Spencer. Maybe she shouldn’t have eaten anything or drunk anything. Dry crackers and ginger ale, Spence! And, Jesus – maybe some Pepto Bismal ,too. …Then brush your teeth, because I don’t think Ash’ll be wanting to kiss a crackery mouth. Or a pepto-y mouth. Yuck.
